Lesson Plan: Comparing Data Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to compare two sets of data in a variety of contexts using tables and graphs.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- compare the measures of central tendency and measures of spread of multiple data sets presented as both tables and graphs,
- calculate the measures of central tendency and measures of spread of multiple data sets in real-world scenarios and use these to solve problems,
- understand how transformations can affect the measures of central tendency and measures of spread of data sets and how to use this to compare data sets.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- representing data as a dot plot, frequency table, box-and-whisker plot, back-to-back stem-and-leaf plot, histogram, line graph, and so on,
- measures of central tendency and measures of spread,
- quartiles and interquartile range,
- standard deviation.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- continuous distributions of data.
