This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the rate of transfer of smoothly flowing fluids through channels with varying cross sections.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • rearrange the formula 𝜌𝐴𝑉=𝜌𝐴𝑉 to calculate changes in a laminar fluid’s flow speed and in its density with changes in the cross-sectional area perpendicular to the fluid’s flow direction.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the fact that the area of a circle (𝐴) = 𝜋× the radius of the circle (𝑟) squared,
  • the fact that mass (𝑚) = density (𝜌)× volume (𝑉).

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • pressure,
  • turbulence,
  • viscosity.
