Lesson Plan: Universal Set
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find a suitable universal set for one or more given sets.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define the universal set as a set that contains all the elements included in one or more given sets,
- write down a suitable universal set given one or more sets.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- using the listing method and the description method to express sets,
- the role of elements in a set, including the notations and ,
- representing sets on Venn diagrams,
- intersections or unions of sets with the notation or ,
- subsets of sets with the notation or ,
- the null set and the notation .
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the complement of a set,
- the difference of two sets,
- the sets , , , and ,
- negative numbers, fractions, or decimals,
- evaluating algebraic expressions.
