Lesson Plan: Multiplying Decimals by Whole Numbers: Place Value Models
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to draw quick place value pictures to multiply a decimal by a whole number.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- break apart numbers and use models to find the product of a decimal and a whole number,
- multiply numbers less than 1 with up to 2 decimal places by a one-digit number,
- multiply numbers less than 10 with up to 2 decimal places by a one-digit number.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- reading, writing, and modeling decimal numbers through hundredths,
- multiplying by one- and two-digit whole numbers,
- separating the whole number and decimal parts of decimals greater than 1,
- using decimal place value counters.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- multiplying by fractions,
- multiplying by numbers greater than or equal to 10,
- multiplying thousandths,
- using area models to solve problems.
