Lesson Plan: Conditional Probability Mathematics • 10th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate conditional probability using formulas and Venn diagrams.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand the definition, terminology, and notation of conditional probability,
  • find whether the probability of one event is dependent on the outcome of another event,
  • calculate conditional probabilities using the formula 𝑃(𝐴𝐵)=𝑃(𝐴𝐵)𝑃(𝐵),
  • interpret word problems including conditional probability,
  • calculate conditional probabilities using Venn diagrams.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • mutually exclusive events,
  • the intersection and union of two events,
  • the complement of an event,
  • the difference between two sets,
  • Venn diagrams.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • two-way tables,
  • tree diagrams,
  • Bayes’s theorem.
