Lesson Plan: Calculating Change: Pounds and Pence
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the amount of change received using the fact that 100 pence equals one pound.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use the fact that 100p equals £1 to subtract numbers to calculate change,
- use models to subtract pounds and pence from an amount,
- write subtraction equations to calculate change, using the correct monetary symbols (£ and p).
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- recognizing coins and notes used in the UK and identifying their monetary value,
- recognizing that 100p equals £1,
- addition strategies, such as counting on, partitioning, and regrouping,
- subtraction strategies, such as counting on and counting back.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- decimal notation for money.
