Lesson Plan: Nonlinear graphs

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to recognize and compare graphs of various types of nonlinear relationships between variables.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is proportional to 𝑥,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is inversely proportional to 𝑥,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is inversely proportional to 𝑥,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is proportional to sin𝑥,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is proportional to cos𝑥,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦graph represents that 𝑦 is proportional to sin𝑥,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is proportional to cos𝑥,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is proportional to 𝑒,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is proportional to 𝑒,
  • recognize where the line of an 𝑥𝑦-graph represents that 𝑦 is proportional to ln𝑥,
  • rank the values of coefficients or powers in the equations of graphs.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • graphs of equations of straight lines,
  • terms of polynomial, trigonometric, and exponential equations.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • calculations using graphs.
