Lesson Plan: Recording Weather

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to interpret a weather map and describe how to measure temperature and wind speed.


Students will be able to

  • define the term weather,
  • describe weather using the terms sunny, cloudy, windy, and temperature,
  • describe the effect weather has on our everyday choices,
  • read a weather map using a legend with symbols,
  • identify how to measure temperature using a thermometer,
  • identify that an anemometer is used to measure wind speed,
  • identify the tools needed to build an anemometer.


Students should already be familiar with

  • how to use a legend on a map,
  • how to use a compass rose on a map.


Students will not cover

  • types of clouds,
  • temperature measurements in degrees Fahrenheit,
  • climate,
  • global warming,
  • climate change.
