Lesson Plan: Optical Properties of Minerals Geology
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the following optical properties of minerals: luster, color, streak, and transparency.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define mineral luster and the different types,
- discuss the different mineral colors,
- describe mineral streak as an important property in mineral identification,
- describe the play of color found in some minerals,
- define mineral transparency and give some examples.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the chemical composition of some minerals.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- optical properties of minerals under a microscope.
