Lesson Plan: Optical Properties of Minerals Geology

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define mineral luster and the different types,
  • discuss the different mineral colors,
  • describe mineral streak as an important property in mineral identification,
  • describe the play of color found in some minerals,
  • define mineral transparency and give some examples.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the chemical composition of some minerals.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • optical properties of minerals under a microscope.
