Lesson Plan: 3D Shapes Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify, name, and draw three-dimensional shapes and recognize their properties including their number of faces, edges, and vertices.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • visualize 3D shapes—namely, prisms, cubes, cuboids, tetrahedrons, pyramids, cylinders, cones, spheres, and hemispheres,
  • recognize the properties of 3D shapes, including those of their faces, edges, and vertices,
  • use isometric paper to draw 3D shapes made from cubes.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the names of 2D shapes.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • nets of 3D shapes,
  • volume and surface area.
