Lesson Plan: Uses of Sulfuric Acid

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the uses of sulfuric acid, balance reaction equations, and calculate the quantities of acid involved.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • give the molecular and structural formulas for sulfuric acid,
  • describe some of the uses of sulfuric acid,
  • identify the hazards of using sulfuric acid,
  • write chemical equations for the reaction of sulfuric acid with metals, metal salts, metal oxides, and other inorganic compounds,
  • calculate the pH or concentration of a sulfuric acid solution,
  • calculate yields for reactions of sulfuric acid.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • acids and bases,
  • calculating pH,
  • calculating formula and molar mass.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the contact process,
  • neutralization reactions.
