Lesson Plan: Congruence of Polygons through Transformations

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to identify congruence of polygons after applying transformations.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that the image of a plane figure under a translation, reflection, rotation, or dilation is similar to the figure,
  • understand that the image of a plane figure under a translation, reflection, or rotation is congruent to the figure,
  • understand that the image of a plane figure under a dilation is not necessarily congruent to the figure,
  • judge whether two shapes are congruent by checking to see if one is the image of a transformation or a sequence of transformations of the other.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • rotations, reflections, translations, and dilations,
  • similarity and congruence of polygons.
