Lesson Plan: Number Sequences
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to recognize, describe, and generate sequences that follow a simple rule.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- find missing terms in a given sequence without a term-to-term rule,
- work with term-to-term rules and
- use a first term and a term-to-term rule to generate terms in a sequence,
- state the first term and the term-to-term rule from given terms of a sequence,
- find the term-to-term rule and missing terms from given terms of a sequence,
- solve more complex problems, such as generating a sequence or specific terms from a word problem in a real-world context.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- simple function machines,
- the four basic operations on numbers,
- negative integers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- sequences described by algebraic nth term rules,
- studying specific types of sequences,
- terminology such as arithmetic sequence or geometric sequence.
