Lesson Plan: Fertilization and Seed Formation Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the process of fertilization in flowering plants and outline the formation and structure of seeds.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • state that the female gametes are ova and male gametes are pollen,
  • describe the process of fertilization, including the formation of a pollen tube and the combination of the nuclei of the gametes,
  • recall that the ovary develops into a fruit and the ovules develop into seeds,
  • describe the structure of a seed as consisting of a seed coat, an embryo, and a food store.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the concept that plants reproduce to produce offspring,
  • the fact that plants can reproduce using pollination.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the formation of gametes by meiosis,
  • details of germination and plant growth.
