Lesson Plan: Measuring Masses Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to correctly use digital weighing scales to measure the mass of liquids and solids.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • state which objects or instruments can be used to accurately measure masses (a weighing scale),
  • recall that all weighing scales actually measure the weight of an object, and it is from this that the mass is calculated,
  • recall that a Newton meter can be used to measure forces, including the weight of an object,
  • use a weighing scale correctly to measure the mass of a liquid or solid,
  • identify when a weighing scale has been used incorrectly to measure a mass and how.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • adding and subtracting integers,
  • adding and subtracting decimals,
  • grams and kilograms.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • instruments other than a weighing scale and a Newton meter,
  • measuring other quantities,
  • how 𝑔, the acceleration due to gravity, varies.
