Lesson Plan: Unit Multiples and Submultiples Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to explain the meaning of common prefixes of SI units, including multiples (kilo-, mega-, etc.) and submultiples (milli-, micro-, etc.).
Objectives
Students will be able to
- give the meaning of the prefixes used for metric unit multiples and submultiples as a power of 10,
- understand that a unit multiple or submultiple is easily converted to the main unit by substituting the prefix with its corresponding power of 10 (e.g., ),
- order multiples or submultiples of a given unit,
- find the relation between two multiples or submultiples or both,
- convert between units and their multiples and submultiples using scientific notation.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- metric units,
- scientific notation.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- converting between compound units.
