Lesson Plan: Probability of Simple Events Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the probability of a simple event and write it as a fraction.

Students will be able to

  • determine the number of events and the total number of outcomes in the sample space in order to calculate the probability of a simple event,
  • use the formula 𝑃(𝐸)=𝑛(𝐸)𝑛(𝑆) to calculate the probability of a simple event,
  • solve problems in more complex contexts involving simple probabilities.

Students should already be familiar with

  • simplifying fractions,
  • the language of probability to describe the likelihood of events,
  • the concepts of probability, outcomes, and sample space,
  • finding the number of outcomes of an event or the sample space.

Students will not cover

  • mutually exclusive events,
  • compound events.
