Lesson Plan: Converting Units of Time: Hours, Minutes, and Seconds Mathematics • 4th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to convert a larger unit into a smaller unit when working with days, hours, minutes, and seconds and compare durations by converting into the same unit.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • convert durations up to 10 days into hours,
  • convert durations up to 10 hours into minutes,
  • convert durations up to 10 minutes into seconds,
  • convert durations up to 10 hours into seconds,
  • convert mixed measures by converting the larger unit into the smaller unit,
  • compare two durations, including mixed measures.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • reading, writing, adding, and subtracting numbers up to 10,000,
  • multiplying three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers,
  • multiplying by 10.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • writing number sentences using the approximately equal symbol (),
  • multiplying by two-digit numbers.
