Lesson Plan: Dividing a Multidigit Number by a One-Digit Number

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to divide a five- or six-digit number by a one-digit number by breaking apart the number or by using the standard algorithm.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • partition multi-digit numbers in order to make them simpler to divide by a single digit,
  • use the written long division method to divide five- and six-digit numbers by a single digit,
  • apply knowledge to solve word problems that involve dividing five- and six-digit numbers by a single digit,
  • choose the most appropriate strategy to divide numbers.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • dividing up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers with and without remainders,
  • extending known multiplication facts up to 10×10 to related facts involving multiples of 10 and 100.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • dividing by two-digit numbers,
  • representing remainders as fractions or decimals.
