Lesson Plan: Resonance of Strings

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to determine the resonant oscillation frequency of a taut string and describe its harmonic oscillation modes.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that a standing wave on a string is produced by waves of the same frequency traveling along the string in opposite directions,
  • recognize that the phase of a wave on a string changes by 𝜋 radians when the wave reflects from a fixed end of the string,
  • recognize that the number of harmonic oscillation modes, 𝑛, of a standing wave of wavelength 𝜆 on a string of length 𝐿 is described by the equation 𝜆=2𝑛𝐿,
  • apply the equation 𝑣=𝑇𝑚𝐿 to waves that interfere to produce a standing wave.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • 𝑣=𝑇𝑚𝐿.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the dispersion of waves.
