This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to rotate points, line segments, and shapes about given points.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that a counterclockwise rotation is represented by a positive angle and that a clockwise rotation is represented by a negative angle,
  • rotate points, line segments, and shapes about points given the center of rotation and the measure and direction of the angle of rotation by constructing an angle,
  • identify the image of a point, line segment, or shape after a given rotation,
  • understand that rotating an object 180 counterclockwise is equivalent to rotating it 180 clockwise.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • rotational directions (clockwise and counterclockwise),
  • the concepts of reflections, rotations, and translations,
  • constructing an angle.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • rotations on the coordinate plane,
  • combining transformations,
  • questions where angle measures are given in radians.
