Lesson Plan: Static Friction Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to analyze the forces acting on objects on frictional surfaces that are required to induce motion in the objects.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define the coefficient of static friction 𝜇 using 𝜇=𝐹𝑚𝑔𝜃cos, where 𝐹 is the magnitude of a force applied parallel to a surface and 𝜃 is the angle made by the surface with the horizontal,
  • understand how to determine the static friction force on an object,
  • calculate the coefficient of static friction between two surfaces.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the meaning of friction,
  • the meaning of weight.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • kinetic friction,
  • rotation of objects,
  • shear stress.
