Lesson Plan: Standard Molar Gas Volumes Chemistry
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the molar volume of a gas from the gas volume and number of moles under standard conditions.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- state the formula for calculating molar volume,
- calculate the molar volume of a gas from the gas volume and number of moles,
- recall that the standard molar gas volume at room temperature and pressure (RTP) is 24 dm3/mol,
- recall that the standard molar gas volume at standard temperature and pressure (STP) is 22.7 dm3/mol,
- describe what conditions constitute RTP and STP (RTP: 1 bar and 20 degrees Celsius, STP: 1 bar and 0 degrees Celsius),
- calculate the volume or number of moles of gases at RTP,
- calculate the volume or number of moles of gases at STP.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- mole calculations.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- gas laws,
- molar concentrations.
