Lesson Plan: Distributive Property of Multiplication Mathematics • 3rd Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify, explain, and use the distributive property of multiplication to multiply numbers up to 10 × 10 by breaking numbers apart.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define the distributive property,
  • use models to investigate the distributive property of multiplication,
  • use the distributive property of multiplication to rewrite a given expression,
  • use the distributive property to evaluate a given numerical expression,
  • use the distributive property of multiplication to find a missing factor in a multiplication expression,
  • use the distributive property of multiplication to solve word problems.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • multiplication up to 10×10,
  • multiplying using area models and arrays,
  • the commutative property of multiplication,
  • the associative property of multiplication.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • fractions or decimals,
  • factors greater than 10,
  • variables.
