Lesson: Finding Percents Mentally Mathematics

In this lesson, we will learn how to find percents mentally by using a fraction or decimals.

Lesson Plan

Students will be able to

  • mentally calculate percentages that are multiples of ten by dividing by 10 and multiplying up,
  • find 5% of something by dividing by 10 then dividing by 2,
  • find 2.5% of something by dividing by 2 again,
  • find 1% of something by dividing by 10 and then dividing by 10 again,
  • find other percentages (like 7.5%, 17.5%, etc.) by adding up 5%s, 10%s, 2.5%s, etc.,
  • understand and use the fact that 𝐴% of 𝐵 is the same as 𝐵% of 𝐴,
  • use nice equivalences of percentages and fractions (25%=14, 20%=15, etc.) to calculate percentages mentally.
