Lesson: The Periodic Table Science • Second Year of Preparatory School

Students will be able to

• describe how the modern periodic table is arranged,
• give uses of some of the elements such as silicon, nitrogen, and cobalt,
• read the periodic table,
• name the different groups, periods, and blocks of elements in the periodic table,
• determine an element’s position in the periodic table from its electronic configuration,
• determine the number of electrons in the outer shell of an element based on its position in the periodic table,
• name the four different types elements can be divided into (metals, nonmetals, metalloids, and inert gases) and classify elements into each of these groups,
• locate the positions of metals, nonmetals, metalloids, and inert gases in the periodic table,
• describe trends in elemental type when moving across a period and down a group,
• describe and explain the trends in atomic radii across periods and down groups.
