In this lesson, we will learn how to identify and name alkali metals, describe their physical properties, and explain their chemical activity.

Students will be able to

identify the location of the alkali metal group on the periodic table,
identify and name the elements in the alkali metal group,
know that alkali metals react with water to form alkali solutions (hydroxides),
state that all the elements of the alkali metal groups contain one electron in their outer shell,
state that all the elements of the alkali metal group lose one electron to form positive ions with a +1 charge,
explain that all the elements of the alkali metal group are stored under kerosene (paraffin) because they are very reactive in air,
know that chemical activity increases when moving down the alkali metal group,
describe the physical properties of alkali metals and trends down the group.
