Lesson: Electrical Resistance Science

Students will be able to

• recall that electrical resistance is the opposition to the flow of charges within a conductor,
• recall that very large currents can cause wires to heat up,
• recall that an electrical conductor is a material that it is easy for charge to flow through,
• recall that an electrical insulator is a material that it is hard for charge to flow through,
• recall that metals are generally good electrical conductors,
• recall that nonmetals are generally electrical insulators,
• recall that resistance can be measured in ohms,
• recall that if there is a potential difference across a component of one volt and the current through the component has a value of one ampere, then the resistance of the component is one ohm,
• recall the circuit symbol for a resistor,
• recall that wires have a very small resistance that can be ignored most of the time but that is not exactly zero.
