Lesson: Degree of Dissociation Chemistry

Students will be able to

• explain and calculate the degree of dissociation of a weak acid,
• write equations for the dissociation constant (Ka) in terms of volume and degree of dissociation,
• state and derive Ostwald’s law of dilution and the relationship between Ka, degree of dissociation, the volume,
• calculate Ka for a weak acid from the initial concentration and degree of dissociation and vice versa,
• explain the relationship between the degree of dissociation and dilution (either through volume or concentration),
• explain the effect the degree of dissociation of electrolytes has on the electrical conductivity of a solution.
