Lesson: Solids, Liquids, and Gases Chemistry

Students will be able to

• use the particle model to explain the arrangement of particles in solids, liquids, and gases,
• describe the structure of solids, liquids, and gases in terms of particle separation, arrangement, and types of motion,
• describe differences between the arrangement, particle separation, movement, and relative energy of particles in solids, liquids, and gases,
• state the distinguishing properties of solids, liquids, and gases,
• link changes in energy to physical changes in state using the particle model,
• describe changes of state in terms of melting, boiling, evaporation, freezing, condensation, and sublimation using kinetic theory,
• predict the physical state of a substance under specified conditions, given suitable data,
• discuss limitations in the particle model in order to appreciate the relevance to actual matter.
