Lesson: Neutralization Reactions Chemistry

Students will be able to

• define a neutralization reaction and identify the names for the species involved: acid, base, and salt,
• identify the acid, base, and salt from a word or a symbolic chemical equation,
• write chemical equations for neutralization reactions,
• recognize that an acid–alkali reaction can be simplified as the reaction of ions with ions to form water,
• describe the general features of a neutralization reaction such as the formation of a salt and water,
• describe how the pH changes during an experiment,
• describe the physical changes during a neutralization reaction such as the release of heat.
