In this lesson, we will learn how to describe the structure of different types of nerve cells and outline their functions.

Students will be able to

recall that nerve cells are referred to as neurons and are specialized to transmit electrical impulses,
describe the structure of a neuron as being the cell body (including the nucleus and neuroplasm), dendrites, axon, nodes of Ranvier, and the myelin sheath (including the neurolemma),
describe the functions of the parts of a neuron,
recall that the flow of a nerve impulse through a neuron travels from dendrites cell body axon axon terminals,
describe and compare the functions of sensory, motor, and relay (connector) neurons,
describe the structure of a nerve as bundles of neurons surrounded by connective tissue (epineurium),
state the functions of the neuroglia as providing support and protection, supplying nutrients, and repairing damaged neurons.
