Lesson: Reactions of Oxides Chemistry • Second Year of Secondary School

Students will be able to

• understand that an oxide is a compound that contains oxygen and another element,
• identify and understand whether an oxide is basic or acidic based on whether it is a metal or nonmetal oxide,
• understand the term amphoteric and therefore what an amphoteric oxide is based on its reaction with acids and bases,
• identify and understand neutral oxides, based on their lack of reaction with acids or bases,
• write chemical equations for the reaction of oxides with acids,
• identify the acid used from the products of a given chemical reaction,
• describe pH tests to determine if an oxide is acidic or basic,
• identify the order of reactivity of elements using their reaction with oxygen.
