Video: Creating and Managing Classes

In this video, we will show you how to create a class as an educator, how to manage your assigned classes, and how to add/remove the assigned courses for your class.

In this video, we will show you how to create a class as an educator, how to manage your assigned classes, and how to add/remove the assigned courses for your class.

In order to create a class as an educator, you must be a portal educator and be signed in to

It is worth noting that each class can have one associated teacher account and multiple associated co-teacher accounts.

As an educator, when you create a class, you are automatically assigned as the class teacher. If you want to add co-teachers to the class, you will need to speak to your portal admin.

To create a class, first, click on “Classes” in the toolbar and click “+ New Class”. Now, you’ll need to add information for your newly created class.

The first piece of information is the class subject. The drop-down list provided will display all of the subjects that are active on your portal. However, remember that, by default, your account has been assigned as the class teacher. This means you will only be able to select the subjects that you have associated with your account. The rest of the options will be greyed out.

Once you have done this, the next option is the class grade. As with the above option, you will have access to a drop-down menu, but you will only be able to select the options that you have associated with your account.

The next two fields are for the class code and title.

Note that the class title is the name that your students and educators will see when looking at this class on their portals.

The class code should be a short piece of text without any spaces. This code should be unique to help your portal admin identify the class.

For this example, we are currently creating a physics class in 2nd secondary stage. So, we will choose the code to be 2secP and we’ll set the title of the class to be 2nd Secondary Physics Group.

Once you’re happy that the details for the class are correct, click “Create”. You’ll then see a green banner that says “The class was created successfully” and you’ll see your new class appear in the list of all classes. If an error occurs, a message will appear explaining the problem. If this happens, please follow the guidance and click “Create” again.

Back on the main “Classes” page, you will be able to see all of your associated classes, including the one that you have just created.

After creating a class, the next step is to add students. You can do this by clicking the three dots in the top right corner of a class thumbnail. This opens the action menu for the class.

From here, click “Add Students”. This takes us to a page where student accounts can be linked to the class. Clicking the “Students” drop-down box opens a list of all of the students in the grade associated with this class. You can click on these names to add a student to the class.

You can also start typing a name into the “Students” box to filter the list and more easily find an individual student. If you make a mistake, you can remove a student by clicking the small “x” to the left of their name. If you need to create more student accounts, contact your portal admin.

Note that the grade and the class drop-down menus on this page are for navigating only. We can view and edit the students in other classes using these drop-down menus instead of returning to the “Classes” main page.

Once you have added all of the students to your class, remember to click the “Save” button at the bottom right of the screen.

We are now back on the “Classes” main page. Now that we have added students, we might want to assign a course to our class.

Note that when you first create a class, your portal will automatically assign any courses associated with the class subject and grade within your locale. Feel free to remove these if necessary.

In order to see the available course, scroll to the bottom of any page and click “Courses” in the “Content” menu. From here, you can see the full list of courses available in your portal.

Clicking one of the courses will show you all of the chapters and the individual lessons within a course, which you can examine further if you wish.

Let’s return back to the “Classes” page and add this course. To do this, open the action menu for your class, and then click “Add Courses”.

Adding a course works in a similar way to adding a student. The “Courses” drop-down menu will show you a list of all of the available courses for the subject associated with the class.

You can add or remove any number of courses in the same way as students. You can also filter the list by typing to find a course more easily.

Once you are happy with the course selection, click “Save”.

Great! We have now populated our class with students and added courses to provide our students with learning resources.

If we head over briefly to look at a student account, they’ll now see any courses linked to their portal by heading to their “Courses” page. They can jump straight into their learning by clicking on the course and then opening one of the lessons!

To finish off, let’s return to the educator “Courses” page and look at the other options available in the action menu for each class.

The first of these actions is to “Edit”. From this screen, you will be able to edit the class code and title. Note that once a class has been created, you will not be able to edit the subject or the grade. To change these details, or to delete a class, you will need to contact your portal admin.

Going back to the class action menu, you also have an option to “View Details”. Clicking this takes you to a summary screen for the class.

On this screen, you can navigate between the students in the class, the educators added, and the courses assigned.

On the student tab, you can see the student details, including their usernames. You have a handy search box at the top if you want to quickly locate a particular student in the class, and you can download the class list as an XLS file.

If you click on the “Educators” tab, you can see all of the educators added to the class.

Finally, if you click on the “Courses” tab, you can browse any courses assigned to the class. If you click on one of the courses, you can then navigate to the course lesson and browse all of the lesson content.

The last action we can take for a class is to “View Wall”. The class wall is a place where you can send messages to your students directing them towards content.
