Lesson Flashcards: Male Genital System Biology

Egg cell (ovum)

The female reproductive cell, or gamete

Leydig cells

The cells that are located in the testes between the seminiferous tubules and secrete testosterone

Ejaculation

The expulsion of sperm out of the penis

Acrosome

A cap-like organelle that coats the anterior of the head of a sperm cell and contains enzymes capable of digesting the coating of an egg cell

Copulation/sexual intercourse/sex

The biological process in which the male inserts his penis into the female’s vagina

Hyaluronidases

Hydrolytic enzymes originating from the acrosome to break down hyaluronic acid that facilitates sperm penetration into the egg cell

Zygote

A diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes

Centrioles

Organelles that are responsible for organizing the spindle fibers formed during cell division

Prostate gland

A gland that is located below the bladder in males and secretes an alkaline prostate fluid, one of the components of semen added to sperm arriving from the vas deferens

Bladder

An organ that stores urine until it is expelled from the body

Cowper’s glands (bulbourethral glands)

Two small glands located on either side of the male urethra, below the prostate gland, that secrete alkaline mucus into the semen

Embryo

The early developmental stage of an organism after a zygote has undergone cleavage and before it develops into a fetus

Testosterone

A sex hormone, primarily produced by the testes, that stimulates the growth of sex organs and the development of secondary sexual characteristics in males

Epididymis

A long coiled tube that stores sperm and transports them from the testes into the vas deferens

Testes

Male gonads that produce sperm and male sex hormones

Urethra (male)

A duct through which urine and semen are expelled out of the male body

Androgens

Sex hormones released from the testes and ovaries, and in small volumes from the adrenal glands, to control the development of male sex organs, secondary sexual characteristics, and arousal in both males and females

Vas deferens

A duct in the male reproductive system that transports sperm cells from the epididymis to the urethra

Penis

An erectile organ that contains the urethra, which is a duct used for the expulsion of sperm during ejaculation and urine during urination
