Lesson Flashcards: Mixtures Chemistry

Unsaturated solution

A solution that contains less than the maximum amount of solute dissolved in a solvent at a given temperature

Homogeneous mixture

A mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixture and is called a solution

Solvent

The major component of a solution into which other substances dissolve

Solute

The minor component of a solution, the substance that is described as dissolving

Colloid

A type of heterogeneous mixture in which particles are dispersed throughout a medium, resulting in a mixture that appears to have a homogeneous composition when examined with the naked eye

Suspension

A type of heterogeneous mixture in which large particles are suspended in a medium. The large particles will settle to the bottom of the container over time.

Supersaturated solution

A solution that contains more than the maximum amount of solute that should be able to dissolve in a solvent at a given temperature

Mixture

A combination of two or more substances by physical means in which the substances retain their distinct identities

Saturated solution

A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute dissolved in a solvent at a given temperature

Heterogeneous mixture

A mixture with a nonuniform composition throughout where the composition and properties of the mixture are different
