Lesson Flashcards: Types of Nutrition Biology

Cellular respiration

A process in living organisms through which carbon-containing compounds (e.g., glucose) are broken down to release energy in the form of ATP

Holozoic nutrition

A type of heterotrophic nutrition characterized by the ingestion and internal digestion of liquid or solid food particles

Nutrition

The process of ingesting and assimilating food materials by living organisms that enables them to grow, maintain themselves, and reproduce

Decomposers

Organisms that break down dead organisms

Extracellular digestion

A type of digestion that occurs outside of the cell(s) of the organism that performs the digestion

Carnivore

An organism that gains its nutrition from consuming animal matter only

Omnivore

An organism that gains its nutrition from consuming both plant and animal matter

Heterotrophic organisms

Organisms that obtain food from consuming other organisms or organic matter

Autotrophic organisms

Organisms that are able to synthesize their own food from inorganic materials

Chemotrophs

Organisms that synthesize their own food by converting one type of chemical into another

Parasitic organisms

Organisms that live on or in a host organism and obtain their food from or at the expense of their host

Herbivore

An organism that gains its nutrition from consuming plant matter only

Chemosynthesis

The process by which living organisms synthesize organic compounds by using energy from oxidative reactions involving inorganic compounds instead of light energy

Photoautotrophs

Organisms that use light energy to synthesize their own food from inorganic materials

Saprophytic organisms

Organisms that acquire their nutrients by absorption, mainly of decaying material
