Lesson Flashcards: Cohesive Properties of Minerals Geology

Mineral cleavage

The tendency of some minerals to break along planes of weakness in their crystal structures

Cohesion

The force of attraction between molecules of the same substance

The Mohs hardness scale

A qualitative ordinal scale that measures the relative hardness of minerals, numbered from 1 (the softest mineral) through 10 (the hardest mineral)

Specific gravity

The ratio between the weight of a substance and the weight of an equal volume of water

Malleability

The property that measures a mineral’s ability to deform under compressional forces

Mineral fusibility

The ease at which a mineral will melt

Mineral hardness

A mineral’s resistance to scratching

Ductility

The property that measures a mineral’s ability to deform under tensile forces

Mineral fracture

The appearance or pattern of a broken mineral surface that is not related to cleavage
