Lesson Flashcards: Physical Properties of Transition Metals Chemistry

Transition metal

An element whose atoms have an incomplete d subshell or that can give rise to cations with an incomplete d subshell

Diamagnetic substance

A substance with no overall magnetic moment because all of its orbitals are filled with paired electrons

Paramagnetic substance

A substance with a magnetic dipole moment, usually as a result of the presence of unpaired electrons

Ferromagnetic substance

A substance able to form a permanent magnet
