Lesson Flashcards: Covalent Bonding Chemistry • 10th Grade
Simple schematic illustrations that show how valence shell electrons are shared or transferred between atoms in covalently or ionically bonded compounds
Covalent bond
A chemical bond that is formed when two nonmetal atoms share one or more pairs of electrons
Octet rule
Atoms tend to transfer or share electrons to obtain eight valence shell electrons and the same electron configuration as the nearest atom of noble gas.
Lone-pair electrons
The valence electrons that do not form part of any chemical bonds
Bond-pair electrons
Valence electrons that comprise a chemical bond
